The Palestinian Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas has expressed opposition to Palestine's application for full UN membership.
Former Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniya made the remark on Friday following the application by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Haniya said his group supports the establishment of a Palestinian state with full sovereignty, but that liberation of Palestinian land from occupation must come first.
Rallies were held to welcome the UN bid in the West Bank, where support for Abbas is strong. But no such rallies were allowed in the Gaza Strip, which is effectively controlled by Hamas.
Hamas' opposition to the UN bid has highlighted the internal conflict among Palestinians.
